Statement on the bombings in Bodhgaya

The Nepal Buddhist Federation (NBF) is deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic events at Bodhgaya in Bihar on Sunday, July 7th. The Mahabodhi Temple complex—the target of this atrocious acts —is of supreme religious significance as the holiest site in the world for Buddhists. It is the very place where the Buddha attained enlightened awakening 2557 years ago. The site is also of great historic significance as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The NBF takes a strong and unequivocal stand against violence as taught by the Buddha himself. As of now, we are not clear on the motivation behind these acts but they are clearly aimed at creating terror and distrust. The NBF urges all communities and Buddhists around the world to practice tolerance and compassion and to work together in constructive ways to address conflict and differences, and to build trust and understanding. We pray for the speedy recovery of all the injured.
